The Lectures

Norfolk, Neb. (First Church).—John Randall Dunn, lecturer; introduced by Miss Annie Bowers, who said in part:—

Christian Science was given to the world to bring freedom to mankind. Paul said, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty;" and on page 227 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says, "Love and Truth make free, but evil and error lead into captivity." Christian Science brings to the consciousness the illuminating revelation of the allness of God, which heals the sick and sinning in both mind and body, and brings joy, peace, and happiness.

Parkersburg, W. Va. (First Church).—Rev. Andrew J. Graham, lecturer; introduced by Miss Mary L. Bruce, who said in part:—

The message which comes to us this evening is one which introduces us to the kingdom of heaven. Christian Science is not rhetoric but realization, and thousands of men and women all over the world to-day are proving beyond a shadow of doubt that when the truth which Christian Science teaches about God and man's relationship to God, is realized in individual consciousness, the kingdom of heaven is attained.

Chester, Pa. (First Church).—Virgil O. Strickler, lecturer; introduced by George O. Melick, who said in part:—

Christian Scientists have no wish to thrust their religion upon any one, but have only the desire to bring within reach of every sufferer, whatever the malady may be,—moral, physical, financial,—a remedy that has been put to the test and has not been found wanting.

Many thousands have proved the efficacy of this remedy and it is with overflowing hearts that they testify to Christian Science. Most of them have turned to Christian Science because every other means of satisfying their dire need had been exhausted. They have become regenerated, filled with a new hope. They have found rules of life and living that they carry with them and put to use in their business, social, and home affairs. "They have found the Great Companion back of the universe working with them, loving them, and aiding every righteous effort." So the great desire of Christian Scientists is to give to a world buffeted on all sides by specters of misfortune, a cup of cold water in the name of Christ Jesus, who said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Weston-super-Mare, England (First Church).—Miss Mary G. Ewing, lecturer; introduced by F. J. Woods, who said in part:—

Christian Science has come to elucidate the deep spiritual truths of the Bible. We know how necessary this is; for Paul warns us that the spiritual truths of God are foolishness to the natural man so that he cannot receive them. Then he explains the reason, and it is because they must be "spiritually discerned." Now Christian Science is supplying this spiritual discernment, which results in the destruction of sin and disease in hundreds of thousands of cases.

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (First Church).—Dr. Walton Hubbard, lecturer; introduced by Warwick Lloyd, who said in part:—

Most of us can testify to the healing power of the truth, as gained by the study of Christian Science, not only for physical or bodily troubles but also for mental distress and business problems. The business man of to-day is faced with many difficulties, but with a careful and earnest study of the Principle that governs the universe and mankind, as understood in Christian Science, those difficulties will disappear.

Newton, Mass. (First Church).—Dr. John M. Tutt, lecturer; introduced by Harry I. Hunt, who said in part:—

It is inconceivable that a law of God should be operative at one time and not at another if God is omnipotent as the Scriptures declare Him to be; or that the creator cannot maintain His creation in perfect harmony. Yet if we were to accept as true all that we see in the material world to-day, we should be obliged to admit that God must have relinquished His omnipotence, and that His law had been superseded by the law of evil.

Happily for us and for the world, a spiritually minded New England woman, Mary Baker Eddy, has discovered the Principle of God's universe and has formulated rules for its demonstration in overcoming all evil. Mrs. Eddy named her discovery Christian Science, and gave it to the world in her book, Science and Health, first published in 1875. Students of this Science all down the intervening years and up to this present moment, have been demonstrating this Principle in healing mankind of sickness and woe, sorrow and sin, poverty and pain, thus proving that the divine law governing the healing ministry of Jesus, and the so-called miracles of prophets and apostles, is operative to-day, and that the creation which God saw and pronounced "very good," in the first chapter of Genesis, is still very good.

Burlington, Kan. (First Church).—John W. Doorly, lecturer; introduced by Mrs. O. G. Mechem, who said in part:—

Christian Science is a religion of right thinking. If, at this moment, every individual in the world were thinking rightly, there would be no more sin, nor sickness, nor sorrow; all would be happiness and joy; in other words, all would be dwelling in the kingdom of heaven.

Christian Science is a practical and demonstrable religion that is fast meeting the demands of an unsettled world; and Christian Scientists everywhere, in this and foreign lands, are proving that God rightly understood is a "very present help in trouble."—The Burlington Republican.

Watertown, Mass. (auspices The Mother Church).—John Randall Dunn, lecturer; introduced by Miss Julia A. Dyer, who said in part:—

Christian Science teaches that salvation is to be attained individually, not vicariously. Therefore an understanding of that which constitutes salvation is necessary to its attainment. And this is just what Christian Science is giving to the world to-day,—a demonstrable knowledge of God and His Christ which results in salvation. Students of Christian Science can truly say with the psalmist, "He that is our God is the God of salvation."

Redondo Beach, Calif. (First Church).—Frank H. Leonard, lecturer; introduced by Mrs. Zella A. Thomas, who said in part:—

Christian Science is not a new religion. It is the same truth Jesus taught and demonstrated on the shores of Galilee. The world is still asking, "What is truth?" and the answer is found in Christian Science.

Jacksonville, Fla. (First Church).—Mrs. Blanche K. Corby, lecturer; introduced by Attorney Lee Guest, who said in part:—

Christian Science as taught by its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, is assisting its hundreds of thousands of students now in practically every town and hamlet in the world to know God aright, to know that the God who created all and saw that all He created was good, as recorded in the Bible in the first chapter of Genesis, also provided a law by which His creation is sustained and not forsaken.

The Sunday Times-Union.

Portland, Ore. (First Church).—George Shaw Cook, lecturer; introduced by Miss Blanche Luckey, who said in part:—

Through the coming of Jesus the Christ, the world was given a deeper look into the truth that God is Love. For about three hundred years this higher conception flourished, but was finally engulfed in materialism and superstition, even as a cloud temporarily hides the sun. In the ensuing centuries, like rifts of light through the dark clouds, there appeared here and there brave men who glimpsed the truth; but they could not give the reason for the hope that stirred within them, and thus the light of Truth remained dim. As human life became more complex, a deeper yearning went out from the heart of mankind for a God who could be understood and to whom they could turn not only in their sins but in sickness, sorrow, and business problems, and find comfort and help. This prayer was answered by the discovery of Christian Science by Mary Baker Eddy, a woman of rare purity of thought and consecration of life. Mrs. Eddy experienced a healing through divine Love, and clung to the vision thus attained until she discovered the rule of Principle back of it. Because of her deep love for mankind, she labored for several years to put her discovery in such form that the world would be benefited by it, and finally her book entitled "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" was published.
