Because the evangelist now holding services in your city...
The Republican
Because the evangelist now holding services in your city takes exceptions to Mrs. Eddy's view of hell, he classifies her as an unbeliever. The Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, makes clear a scientific and demonstrable knowledge of God and of the life and demonstration of His Son, Christ Jesus. Every page of this wonderful book forcefully emphasizes Holy Writ in declaring the allness and ever-presence of God, thereby making it possible for mankind to make use of that first and great commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," which when spiritually understood meets every human need.
The Scriptures declare that "God is love;" they further record that He is the one and only creator, and that which He made is "very good." Using this spiritual fact as the basis of reasoning, and adhering to the law of cause and effect, it is impossible to reach the conclusion that God, infinite Love, created a hell. The term hell but signifies the wrong doing of mortals—the mistakes of men; it is the manifestation of an evil condition for which God is not responsible and which does not exist as an entity. This hell does not constitute a place or locality where one may go or be sent. Its presence is wholly mental. The hell of wrong thinking results in the hell of wrong doing, and the hell of wrong doing produces the hell of torment and suffering for the evil thinker.
While Christian Science teaches the unreality of sin, it also shows quite plainly that those who indulge in evil doing cannot escape its penalty; sin always punishes the sinner. Christian Science does not ignore or offer any excuse for sin, but emphatically declares that evil must be corrected, which correction is the forgiveness of the sin. Just so long as the sin is indulged the hell is at hand. The teaching and demonstration of Christian Science is fulfilling the hope of Christianity by making it possible for those who are in bondage to disease and sin to awaken from the dream of sense into a realization of the perfection, beauty, and indestructibleness of the glorious works of God.
