In the spring of 1915 I suffered incessantly for ten weeks from an illness said to be due to stoppage of the gall duct, for which an operation was recommended, though I determined not to submit to it. The best of care was given me, as I was in a hospital most of the time and always had a nurse in attendance; nevertheless at the end of the ten weeks I was little more than a frame and my suffering was almost unbearable. It became necessary to use hot applications almost constantly to keep up the circulation, as I was losing the use of my legs. Sleep was almost gone from me, and death seemed inevitable; indeed I longed for it to come.
At this stage my father read a Christian Science lecture in our daily paper. He read part of it to me, and just listening to it made me feel stronger; so, although we knew practically nothing of Christian Science, we sent for a practitioner. I remember how refreshing were the first truths of life and health which were revealed to me when the practitioner read of God's love and of God's allness from the Bible and from the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I had been believing that a power apart from God could make me suffer, to the extent that my whole consciousness was congnizant of suffering only; and what a joy came with the assurance that divine Love is the only power! I could hardly grasp what this meant, at first, but knew that it was good and that it was of God.
After the first treatment I fell asleep and slept peacefully for five hours. When I awakened, the practitioner read to me again for about an hour, after which I spent the night in sound and natural sleep. Late the next morning I awakened happy, and for the first time enjoyed the songs of the birds, which before had been a source of annoyance. Since then I have not had a sleepless or restless night. While the practitioner was reading to me that morning, I suddenly felt that I could walk; so I arose and walked about the room, although I had not been able even to stand alone for a long time. At noon I went to the dining room and ate with the family, and have since eaten ordinary food.
