The Lectures

Lakewood, Ohio (First Church).—Ezra W. Palmer, lecturer; introduced by John B. Coffinberry, a former mayor, who said in part:—

In the old line of thought many of us were led to believe that there existed an enemy for whom we must ever be on guard. We never knew where to locate this enemy, consequently never knew where to make the charge; neither did we know what weapon to use in our defense. Through fear of this one evil, life often became a burden. We were traveling a long, tiresome road, at the end of which we hoped to find heaven. At times this hope became very dim, and we scarcely knew in what direction to look for light.

A research of Mrs. Eddy's works will, I believe, locate this enemy. It is found in the arena of out own mind and consists of wrong thinking. The charge, therefore, is to be made upon one's self; the weapon to be used is the truth about God and our relation to Him. With matters thus simplified, the long road, at the end of which we hoped to find heaven, becomes less tiresome. The study of Christian Science proves that heaven and harmony are at hand, and if we follow this line of thought, we are apparently entering upon a new life. The burdens will gradually fall away; freedom and happiness will take the place of fear as we begin to realize what the Master meant when he said that the kingdom of heaven is within. It is then that we begin to appreciate how much the world is indebted to Mrs. Eddy for the long and wonderful life in which she lived to bless others.
