Progress Toward Perfection

According to an old German proverb, "He who goes not forward, goes backward." One cannot stand still. When yesterday's ideal is attained, it becomes the lever of today for lifting tomorrow's ideal to a higher plane of thought. Every step of progress toward perfection ennobles one's ideal so that it always seems beyond present realization. Robert Browning says that—

A man's reach should exceed his grasp,
Or what's heaven for?
