I take pleasure in testifying to the healing power of Christian Science...

I take pleasure in testifying to the healing power of Christian Science in sickness, accident, sorrow, business difficulties, and other problems of earthly existence. For many years I had been searching for God, feeling certain that only sufficient knowledge was necessary to enable me to live so as to be successful, happy, and contented. I sought without prejudice, but found that material philosophers offered nothing better than an unknowable God or first cause. I found that "mental science" offered many nice sounding phrases, which could be used for self-hypnotism or autosuggestion, but that it had no basis. The study and proof of Christian Science has set at naught these erroneous beliefs in a power apart from God, divine Mind, and has given me a sure foundation in the ever-presence and omniscience of God.

The first reading of Science and Health convinced me that it contained the truth about God, man, and the universe, and though the way has been devious and thorny, faith in Truth has held me always in the Father's loving arms. At times I seemed to be engulfed in sin and disease and felt that I did not understand, but a more earnest study carried me through the waves of error to the haven of a clearer knowledge of divine Mind.

Many trials have come to me during the past ten years. Several years ago, while in a small southern city, a fireworks bomb struck my forehead between the eyes, crushing in the base of my nose and splintering the bones of the forehead, at the same time filling my face with powder. With the terrific shock came the thought that God is our Life, and that nothing could harm me as God's spiritual child. I held closely to the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) and the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation (p. 16). This clinging to what I had learned about God and man kept out of consciousness the belief in accident and pain. All pain stopped within an hour, although I was compelled to work it out myself, as there was no practitioner in town.

A surgeon offered his services, and three stitches were taken to close an artery which had been cut over the eye. I allowed him to do this, but refused an anesthetic. After arriving home, although the pain had been overcome there were many other beliefs regarding breathing, sight, and so on, that had to be destroyed, consequently a telegram was sent to a practitioner in a distant city. The surgeon insisted on giving me a hypodermic injection so that I could sleep, until he was finally told that I had Christian Science treatment and could sleep without drugs. He left the needle and tablets, but the ninety-first and twenty-third psalms, together with Science and Health, proved to be indeed restful, though this was contrary to the doctor's prophecy.

Thanks to the power of infinite Mind there was no fear, hence no fever, and on the following morning the surgeon found my pulse and temperature normal. Within a few days I could see again, although some time elapsed before the sense of sight was fully restored; also the straightening of the nose and forehead has proceeded continuously, but it was two years before the skull felt fully knit together. A month after the accident I was attending regularly to business.

The healing power of Truth was shown likewise in the case of a broken toe, in healing chapped hands, colds, and an acute attack of bronchitis. When confronted with the passing on of loved ones, the knowledge that God is our Life and that all of His ideas are forever inseparable from Him and from each other, carried me through these experiences safely and with increased knowledge of divine Love's ever-presence. The greatest blessing of all, however, is the peace and confidence which comes to us in the spiritual study of the Bible in connection with Science and Health, and the resultant desire to become pure and to have that Mind in us "which was also in Christ Jesus," so as to be able to take part in the healing work of Christian Science. I am sincerely grateful for this revelation.—W. N. Holmes, Chicago, Ill.
