Passaic (N. J.) News
Your paper quotes a clergyman as saying in a recent discourse that Christian Scientists "absolutely deny the existence of God." It was daring in this critic to add to this astonishing statement the assertion that he had made a study of the subject, for the reason that if there is one thought which underlies and permeates all of the teachings of Christian Science, it is this: God is! Christian Scientists not only do not deny the existence of God, but they consistently and continuously affirm the all-power and all-presence of one infinite God.
Christians of every denomination acknowledge that God is the only cause and creator. So do Christian Scientists. Christians generally accept the New Testament teaching that God is good, that He is Spirit, Life, Love, Truth. So do Christian Scientists. All Christians admit that God is the intelligence which directs and governs the universe. Christian Scientists admit this also, and declare that this intelligence is the eternal Mind, or divine Principle, Love. It must be clear, therefore, that the clergyman's statement is wholly incorrect, both with respect to the Christian Science view of God, and also with respect to his statement that Christian Science is not Christian. The teachings referred to above are those of the Founder of Christianity, and in accepting them and in striving to obey the commands of the Master, Christian Scientists offer proofs of their service in doing the works Jesus said his followers should do.
As for the further assertion, that Christian Science is a combination of pantheism and perverted Hinduism, it is plain that the critic is ignorant of the teachings of this Science. Pantheism fuses or confuses God with matter. Christian Science teaches that as God is Spirit, as the Scriptures declare, matter cannot be the product of Spirit; that intelligence is not to be found in non-intelligence. Christian Science bases all action upon the one Mind, and declares with Paul, that the human or "carnal mind is enmity against God."
