These are uncomfortable days for those who have settled down to a comfortable belief that the landmarks of thought are set permanently, and that a curse is upon those who remove these landmarks. The boundaries of ideas are changing. The friction of human experience is wearing down and washing away whole ranges of ideas which were once supposed to be as permanent as "the everlasting hills." They are as permanent as the everlasting hills, but these hills are wearing away also. There are no everlasting hills in ideas. Ideas are fluid. Thought is plastic. Definitions are temporary. But the unthinking believer does not, can not, or will not, understand.

There are two great words that are undergoing a vast change which is involving many of the most important interests of mankind. One of these words is religion. The other word is government.
