in Evening Citizen,

In a recent issue occurs the following quotation "Christian Science, so far as I understand the practice and conduct of those who profess to believe in it, is neither Christian nor Science, but a medley of crude, half-digested ideas culled from the teaching of Christ, the teaching of philosophy, and the teaching of science." In these words the Rev. Mr.—— is reported to have expressed himself. Not very long ago the Archbishop of York, referring to Christian Science, said he had rarely met with such capacity to enter into some of the deeper aspects of truth. He had seen the lives of Christian Scientists tranquil, bright, cheerful. It is quite apparent that the archbishop does not see eye to eye with our critic.

Will you kindly allow me briefly to refer to this clergyman's deliverance? In the first place, his information regarding Christian Science can have been derived only from utterly erroneous sources to have caused him to draw conclusions which are so entirely wrong. Unfortunately, such expressions of opinion are not uncommonly heard from the lips of those who speak about Christian Science hastily or from prejudice, but they invariably remain unuttered after one has seriously looked into the subject. As the quotation gives no indication of the reasons which led him to express himself as he did, we must confine ourselves to stating a few facts about Christian Science.

In "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 1) Mrs. Eddy defines Christian Science as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." Understanding God to be infinite and good, Christian Scientists are striving to know good as the only power which is active and immanent in the universe, bearing in mind the corollary that "evil," having no place in the infinitely good, is without real entity, and is consequently powerless. This spiritual knowledge lies at the foundation of all the moral and physical healings that have taken place through Christian Science since 1866. It is daily and hourly fulfilling the commands of Jesus Christ when "he sent them [his disciples] to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick."
