The Christian World
It has been said, with justice, that just as the working of the Father in all the long history of mankind was only made clear in the revelation of the Son, so the meaning of the Son is only made clear through the Spirit of truth and love and power shed abroad in the hearts of men; and, we may add, the Spirit in His mighty acts will only be understood through the church when it comes to itself. For that moment Christian thinking waits. Till the church has a further experience of its own characteristic life, the mission of the Comforter will not be discovered in all its beauty and power. This, then, is the task which immediately awaits us: to experiment in the common life, as that may be created and guided and sustained by the Holy Ghost; to offer ourselves obediently and humbly for the Holy Ghost to possess, not only as individual persons, but as a social being ("many members, yet but one body").
