Many are the blessings that have come to me through...
Many are the blessings that have come to me through Christian Science, and now I realize the meaning of the statement, "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." I have been led to see very plainly that unless we are willing to make just acknowledgment of blessings received, we are not ready to receive more. Christian Science is indeed the "pearl of great price." When I was about three years old, what were pronounced cataracts formed over the sight of both eyes. My dear parents, who at that time knew nothing of Christian Science, had everything done for me that could be done in materia medica, employing the best physicians in Boston, but all to no avail. I grew steadily worse, and was finally given up to go through life with sightless eyes.
At this critical moment my mother was advised to try mental treatment, and from the first it proved to be something better than materia medica could offer. Although this teaching was not the truth as taught by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health, it served as a stepping-stone to it. I steadily improved, and today there is no trace of the cataracts visible on either eye, and I can and do rejoice in good eyesight. I have learned that sight was never material, and that, as we read in Science and Health (p. 215), "whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life."
Another instance of healing was in the spring of 1910. I was down-stairs, attending to the furnace fire, which needed kindling, and while engaged in splitting wood, the axe slipped and opened the large toe of my left foot to the bone. My little boy was with me, and he immediately rushed off with the news to his father. Meanwhile I declared the truth audibly. My husband insisted on seeing the foot and having a doctor dress it. I consented, knowing that it was the wisest way, since he did not know how to help me in Science. The doctor dressed the toe, but insisted that unless stitches were taken the wound would not heal within two months, and even then there would be a hard ridge; that the nail would come off, etc.; but in less than three weeks, with Christian Science treatment, the toe was perfectly healed, I was able to dress the foot naturally, and there is not a mark to tell the tale.
