I remember that in my childhood I was frequently told that God is everywhere. That statement troubled me greatly at times for about forty years. Still I was lethargic, and I cannot remember that I was ever aroused sufficiently to make an insistent inquiry as to the meaning of it, until after I had been healed in Christian Science, which was four years ago. I am certain no one ever explained to me that God is good and is All, until Christian Science came to me in my extremity in August, 1908. I then lay sick and despondent, heartbroken with grief, and actually calling out loud for something, though then I knew not what; but I now know it was God whom I had wanted all my life. I was healed in the course of about fifteen minutes' conversation. In an hour I was back at my work in the telegraph office, conscious of the sweet peace "which passeth all understanding," and with a sense of having been wonderfully healed both in body and mind, but not knowing exactly whence it came.
Some time afterward I learned that my landlady, who had heard my moaning, and had come to my door insisting on being admitted and permitted to help me, was a Christian Scientist. Christian Science appealed to me from the beginning. Although my growth has seemed slow to me, I am being enabled to put off much of the old man and his false beliefs. I have had some assistance in working out my problems, but for the most part I have tried to work them out alone, and have always been quickly helped by realizing the truth of God's allness and by recalling the words of one of the songs in our Hymnal (p. 208),—
