I can truly say, with the psalmist, "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." Seven years ago, when living in a small town in the western part of this state, I awoke one morning almost entirely helpless.
For years I had been an invalid, a supposedly diseased condition of the spine having developed into paralysis. I had borne "many things of many physicians,"—and right here I wish to say that they did all within their power to give me relief, but material remedies seemed of no avail. I had undergone one serious and two minor operations, and was finally told by one physician that if I could muster up enough will-power I might possibly live a year. This was but slight consolation, in fact rather discouraging after I had tried for years to get well in this way; for I had closely followed the advice of some of the best physicians and surgeons in the state and had spent thousands of dollars. But man's extremity proved to be God's opportunity, for when every material means had failed, we turned to God for help in Christian Science, and it came.
Eight years previous to my healing I had heard of this truth. A friend who was in a hospital when I was there, became discouraged, left the place, asked help of a Christian Science practitioner, and was healed in a few treatments. The physician in charge of the hospital explained to me that this healing was due to hypnotism or mental suggestion, and that my friend was not seriously ill anyway; so I struggled on for eight years, seeking help from every source but the right one.
I was about a hundred miles from the Christian Science practitioner when treatment began, and was so suddenly relieved of the suffering that I called the attending nurse, for I thought I was about to pass on, as after falling asleep I awoke without any pain and lying straight in bed, something I had not done for years; indeed, for two months previous I had lain in one position. The nurse assured me that I was certainly looking better, and she was very kind and helpful. Neither of us knew that I was being treated in Christian Science, as a letter from my husband, informing me that a practitioner had taken my case, failed to reach me until the next morning.
No one, however, who has not passed through a like experience can understand the peace and restfulness that came to me. It was being raised from the grave of material sense. From the first I steadily improved, and now seven years have passed, and in all this time I have not spent one hour in bed because of sickness, whereas previously I was helpless for months at a time. Although I really wished to be, I was not a member of any church, because I could not subscribe to something I could neither understand nor believe. In looking back over those years of development, I can see the desire to know God; and when this prayer was answered, my healing was accomplished.
I can truly say that I am sincerely thankful to God for my healing, and that I am now strong and well, and I am also grateful for the understanding of the Bible which comes from the study of our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I am no less grateful for class instruction, and that I am able to help others in the way I have been helped.
Jennie D. Hohaus, Nebraska City, Neb.
It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I herewith corroborate the above testimony of my wife, for I know that nothing but the power of God is responsible for her present condition and perfect health. Anxiety and worry no longer rule within our home, since we have learned of this blessed truth which makes free. Material remedies, of which there were many, have been discarded, and divine Mind is now our only physician.
I am indeed thankful to the giver of all good, and I am likewise grateful to our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for the many blessings which have come to us through the faithful study of the Bible and the Christian Science text-book.
