It was the loving example of a sweet young girl that led me to take up the study of Christian Science in earnest. I had been called a Christian Scientist for a number of years, but had only an indifferent interest in it. I thought of it merely as a system of cure and often wondered at the interest in it shown by its followers. I could not understand Science and Health and did not care to study it, and the literature which came periodically to the house I never read.
We were traveling companions,—the young friend already mentioned, her mother, and myself,—and we spent several months together. I was very much impressed with her love for Christian Science, her devotion to its teachings, and the love and harmony expressed in all our daily intercourse. Her love for her mother appealed to me very strongly, and one night when her mother was ill, her realization of the truth dispelled the discordant condition so effectually that on the following day the mother was entirely recovered. When we were crossing from Tampa to Havana the sea was so rough that I was very ill; but relief came to me through the Christian Science prayers, as understood by my little friend; and though I had many times experienced Christian Science healing before this, none had impressed me so strongly. I thought I was too ill to be helped by Christian Science or anything else, but in less than half an hour I was asleep.
Later on, when I left North Carolina, where we had been staying for a few days, her mother gave me a little tract, issued by The Christian Science Publishing Society. I read it many times on my way home, thinking it would be good for my mother, who was ill at the time and whom I was going to visit, but I did not then realize the good it was doing me. The necessity for something more than mere human aid for my mother came to me very strongly one night. I asked her if I might help her, and she said "Yes." I had only the slightest idea as to how a Christian Science treatment is given, but I went to my room and for three or four hours with the Bible and Science and Health I earnestly strove to know something of Truth. My mother was better the next day, and through the help of a Christian Science practitioner she was soon restored to perfect health.
