In gratitude for what Christian Science has done for us...
In gratitude for what Christian Science has done for us I would like to give this testimonial. Our baby was taken ill with croup, and her temperature was very high from Saturday till Monday. The doctor was much worried from the start, and Sunday night and early Monday morning was with us for some time. There seemed to be nothing to be done, and by Monday noon she was very low. The doctor then brought another physician with him, and we felt that there was little hope. I asked, "Is there any immediate danger?" and the doctor just turned aside. They both went into another room and closed the door. It was very plain that the end was near, and it seemed as if I would die. I was in a very weak state myself, just out of a sick-bed. We had lost our first baby, and as this was our only one, I was simply overcome with fear.
In this distress I telephoned to a friend who was a Christian Scientist, and she asked why we did not send for a practitioner. I spoke to my husband about it, and he was willing to have Christian Science. We telephoned at two o'clock in the afternoon and the practitioner started absent treatment at once, saying she would be with us at eleven o'clock. From the start we could see an improvement; the baby breathed easier, became conscious and took some food, and then slept for a long time. The practitioner came on the eleven o'clock train, and she and the nurse stayed in the room with the child while the rest of us went to bed. In the morning when we went in baby was sitting up in bed, playing with her toys, and at noon she ate heartily. By two o'clock she was up and dressed and as strong as ever. The doctor came while she was crawling under the bed for a marble, and he said he could not believe his eyes. It is needless to say how thankful to God we were. It seemed as if our hearts would burst with gratitude—it was so wonderful! I told every one of it. I had always believed in Christian Science; but if I had not, this certainly would have been a sufficient proof.
A year ago the child was again taken ill, this time with acute lung trouble. We called a doctor to diagnose the case, but used no material remedies. She also had a bowel disorder from teething. We called the same practitioner, but she could only stay a short time and we needed one right here, as baby was very low and the illness seemed stubborn. My own fear was great, for she seemed not to gain at all, and as on the former occasion she had been healed so quickly, we expected the same results this time. We sent for another practitioner, and she stayed from Sunday until Tuesday. After she left, the baby gained very slowly under absent treatment, having several seeming relapses, when the fever would go up and to sense she would be much worse; but finally, after several weeks' illness, all was overcome through divine Love. To see her gradually but slowly get to be her own self under this treatment was very wonderful indeed, and it was hard to tell which was the more wonderful, the first cure or the last. In all this trouble I derived much comfort from the promise of divine protection in Isaiah xli. 10.
