In the 4th chapter of Hebrews it reads, "We which have believed do enter into rest." I thank God that I "believed" His word and have entered into the rest, the joy and peace which nothing but trust in God can give. In February, 1906, I was carried to a hospital, more dead than alive, as it seemed, and was operated upon for gall-stones. I shall not describe the years of suffering which I had previously endured, but will say that this operation was thought to be a success. This, however, was not my only trouble. There was a serious affection of the stomach and the surgeon said I would have to go back for another operation as soon as I was able. But I did not get strong, I could not retain my food, and was in pain all the time. I went to several specialists, and they all decided that I had a malignant disease of the liver and possibly of the stomach, and that I had but a short time to live. I was under the X-ray treatment, but soon decided that I did not want that. There seemed to be no help for me; I suffered night and day for four long months, waiting for death and trying to be reconciled to it.
I had been a church-member from youth, and tried to live in obedience to its teachings, but when I stood face to face with death I felt that I was about to take a leap in the dark. If this God I was going to meet was the one who had put this burden of pain and sickness upon me, then took me away from my two little ones and my aged mother, who needed my care, I shrank from meeting such a God. I studied the Bible and read that Christ Jesus healed the sick, and I felt the healing was for me if I only knew how to ask. I prayed earnestly for light, and this promise came to me, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled"! And the help came! I then knew nothing of Christian Science, but a neighbor sent me a Sentinel (I have it yet), and a note with love and best wishes. It was like a drink of cold water to a thirsty traveler. I read and drank in every word, and when I read the testimonies I believed them and knew that I, too, could be healed. What a joy it was to know that God did not send the sickness!
I sent at once to this friend for advice and for a copy of Science and Health. Her advice was to call a practitioner, so I sent for one at once. She began treatment about noon, and that night I rested more than I had for months. The next day the pain left me. I had a good rest, but still could not retain my food. In a few days the alarming symptoms returned and other serious difficulties appeared which resulted from the surgical operation to which I was subjected. In spite of all these things, however, I gained steadily for a few weeks. The bloating was greatly reduced and I looked for further improvement, but again the violent vomiting returned and the general conditions were such that the family called a doctor, who said he could do nothing; that nature had done a wonderful work for me, and that if I had strength I might pull through. In a few days an adhesion gave way, and I then gained for a while, but soon grew worse (I was not taking Christian Science treatment then), and my husband again called a doctor. He came and gave me a hypodermic injection, which quieted me; but the one thing I most feared had happened. The doctor said my stomach had closed, and he advised that I take nothing into the stomach, and if I could get strong enough another operation would have to be performed.
