In the fourth chapter of John is a testimonial which has impressed me very forcibly. The woman of Samaria had reported the wonderful words which Jesus had spoken to her, and we learn that after investigating her report many of the Samaritans gave this convincing testimony: "Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world."
Except Mrs. Eddy, I presume that almost every one now interested in Christian Science was first induced to begin the study because of its influence on some one other than themselves. With Christian Science reading-rooms in the center of our city, where visitors are always welcome; with the Wednesday evening meetings, which I now prize so highly; with numbers of good, true Christian Scientists, patient and ever ready to do all they can to aid seekers for truth,—with all these agencies for good here in our own city, it remained for a stranger from Indianapolis, Ind., whom I met in a business transaction, to be the first to lead me to the study of Christian Science. Furthermore, an occasional copy of the Christian Science Sentinel, mailed to me from Indianapolis, after his return, was the immediate channel through which this precious truth first came to my consciousness. I say this in order to encourage all Scientists who read this to send out their literature, resting assured that much of the seed thus sown will not fall in stony places.
Within a short time after meeting the gentleman already mentioned, I decided that he was a true Christian, an earnest worker for Christ's kingdom on earth, and it was upon his invitation that I first attended a Christian Science service. After his return I continued to attend the Sunday service, and was so favorably impressed with the earnestness with which Christian Scientists worship, that I decided to attend a Wednesday evening meeting. I had been a church-member for about seventeen years, and occasionally I attended the evening prayer-meetings, but always found only a few of the oldest and best members in attendance; it is therefore difficult to express my surprise when I found the Christian Science church as well filled on Wednesday evening as it was on Sundays. Indeed this fact alone is enough to convince any unbiased person that there is a reality in this religion. Week after week, month after month, I have attended these Wednesday evening meetings, and always (whether the weather has been pleasant or unpleasant) I have found the church filled, testimonials of healing and spiritual uplifting freely and earnestly given, and the audience ever attentive.
