A clergyman has undertaken to instruct your readers...

A clergyman has undertaken to instruct your readers on the teaching of Christian Science, and as he does not claim to be able to do any of the works which Christian Scientists are doing today all over the world, we are wondering if he really understanding the words of his text—"By thy words thou shalt be justified, and be thy words thou shalt be condemned." It is related that Jesus said: "Ye shall know them by their fruits;" "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." The only mark that Jesus gave his followers by which they should be known as such, was that they should do the works that he did. Has our brother thought of this? On another occasion the Master gave the disciples the parable of the two sons, who were sent to their father's vineyard. One said, "I will not:" but he afterward repented of his action and went. The other said, "I go, sir: and went not." Jesus' closing words were, "If ye love me, keep my commandments."

This critic has quoted very freely from the text-bood of Christian Science in an effort to discredit its statements. The fact remains. however, that this book. Science and Health, when studied from the view-point of its author, Mrs. Eddy, which is that of the spiritual creation of man and the universe, will be found to be true and demonstrable in every statement. The fact that a child cannot understand, or is too indolent or stubborn to apply the rules of mathematics, does not change those same rules that have done effective service with thousands of other children before him.

The gentleman has well said, "One way to prove a system of ideas erroneous is to put them into practice." Has he done so in this instance? Mrs. Eddy has proved her system correct by putting it into practice, and that her teaching is true has been proved by an innumerable company of people from every walk in life. Ridicule and opposition have tried in vain to change the fact that the word of God as taught in Christian Science heals the sick, reforms the drunkard, and regenerates the sinner, as no other system ever has since the time of Jesus the Christ. The fact that one has no personal knowledge of the works of Christian Science gives him no license to declare bublicly that they have not been done. Did our brother believe ten years ago that wireless telegraphy could be a practical success? Does he understand its laws now, so that he can demonstrate them?
