I feel that I would not be doing my duty if I did not...
I feel that I would not be doing my duty if I did not express my gratitude for the wonderful blessings that have come to me through the teachings of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. A neighbor asked me to read this book through before giving an opinion, which I promised to do, more from curiosity than from any thought of what I might gain. It was not therefore from any expectation of healing, but merely to know its contents and to learn if there really was any revealed truth; for I was hungry for truth, and had tried for years to get some evidence that the promises of the Bible were verified. Pulpit oratory did not furnish it, sermons did not give any proof of divine power, blind faith did not comfort; and so I drifted on, year after year, until I read Science and Health. What a change then came to me! Here were statements from God's Word given by one who had demonstrated that they were true, not only to her, but to all mankind. As I read its pages I was filled with joy and peace such as I had never known, and which words cannot express. As I continue to read and ponder on the great truths revealed to my hungry soul, I realize more fully the fact that it is "the Christ, and not the creed" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 399) that makes us whole.
Christian Science appeals to me because it is fundamentally practical, and not a vague theological theory. The Spiritual uplifting, the peace and joy and satisfaction of knowledge to prove all things, weighed by God's word, and to know the truth that makes free, is what I have long been looking for, and I thank God every day for the wonderful work of our dear Leader, whom God has chosen to give this great revelation to humanity. What a different book the Bible is with this new illumination! It is my desire to live so near to divine Love that I may be used to help others to see and know the truth. May His richest blessings attend our dear Leader in her great work of good.—Mrs. Hattie E. Walker, Ottumwa, Ia.
