Memphis (Tenn.) Commercial Appeal

After reading an extract from a sermon delivered by a local clergyman, in which he makes the statement that Christian Science is a broad road to hell, I am reminded of the old saying that "history repeats itself." The scribes and Pharisees of Jesus' day entertained the some opinion regarding his work and teachings, and the statement of the reverend critic regarding the Founder of Christian Science in this age and those who believe in her interpretation of the plain command of Jesus to heal as well as to teach, is directly in line with the charges made against the Master. In Matthew's Gospel we read: "But when the Pharisees heard it. they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils." Then follows the answer of Jesus: "If I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out?"

Let me recommend to the gentleman a surer and quicker way to get rid of Christian Science than by resorting to vituperation and abuse: Let him offer to the world something that meets its needs better than Christian Science is meeting them, and he will find thousands of hearers where he now has but one. Until he can do this he had best abandon the old, worn-out method of abuse, which is as unconvincing as it is unbecoming a follower of the meek and lowly Jesus.
