Christian Science declares unswervingly that there is...

Waterloo and Crosby (Eng.) Herald

Christian Science declares unswervingly that there is and can be one, and only one, reality, and that reality is Truth. This Truth must be either spiritual or material; there cannot be absolute reality in both the spiritual and the material. Spiritual sense declares that God, Spirit, is omnipresent, infinite. Material sense, unable to cognize God or know Him in any manner, asserts that matter is the only reality, while Christian Science declares that there can be no reconciliation between Truth and error, any more than there can be between heat and cold, light and darkness. The only absolute existence anything has is the existence it has in the divine Mind which created it, and in that Mind, too pure to behold evil, all is perfect, harmonious, and eternal. The relative existence anything may have in the mortal, material mind, is nought but the imperfect human concept, an erring belief. It can be but belief, for only of absolute Truth can knowledge be held. Christian Science designates the human material concept, and all the evil which that concept holds (and no evil exists anywhere else) as error. Did not Jesus stigmatize evil, personified for the thought of the day as Satan, as a liar? Did he not teach that the flesh "profiteth nothing"? Paul, too, referred to the whole material concept as the "carnal mind," which he explained was enmity against, or contradiction of, God, the divine Mind. It is this distinction that gives force to such injunctions as "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." and "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."

It will be seen that no Christian Scientist would aver that matter, evil, and pain are anything but very real to our human sense, though such a travesty is constantly being presented from the pulpit as Christian Science teaching.
