THE LECTURES

The Town Hall was well filled on Tuesday evening [May 4] when Francis J. Fluno, M.D., gave a lecture on Christian Science. The assembly included many invalids interested in the subject, and a large number of Liverpool and Manchester Christian Science adherents. Dr. Fluno was introduced by Dr. Walter Wilding, who in his opening remarks said the subject of the lecture was one of great importance, and was of increasing interest in England, especially so in the north. All classes of people by this time knew something about it, and the work already accomplished in this country was causing people of various and differing shades of thought to give it some attention. To many it was a startling, unique, but doubtless a prophetic sign of the times in which they lived, that for the first time in the history of the country two medical doctors were met on one platform—of one accord—for the sole purpose of giving some information on the subject of Christian Science. Many years ago the lecturer practised medicine on the other side of the world, under the laws of the United States, and he himself in this country, under the laws of the United Kingdom. Each of them came to a place in life's experience when it was found impossible to contain the "new wine"—Christian Science—in the "old bottle" of medical science. As Christian Scientists they went hand in hand with orthodox practising medical men in lending the best efforts of their lives to the relief of mankind from the stronghold of disease. They made a common cause with them. Their aim was the same, but they differed widely in their methods. Before abandoning medical practice he had witnessed the healing through Christian Science prayer of several cases of otherwise incurable disease. His daughter suffered from tuberculosis in both hip joints and in the lungs, and had rapidly wasted away until little remained but skin and bone. Every possible material means had been tried, but nothing arrested the downward progress. When the grave seemed terribly near, help was sought in Christian Science, and all things became new—splints, couch, spinal carriage were discarded, pain ceased, and normal conditions gradually appeared. Every breath his daughter had drawn for more than eight years had been due solely to the understanding of Life learned through Christian Science. Witnessing from the criticizing standpoint of a doctor in actual practice the healing power of Christian Science in this and other equally incurable cases of disease, compelled him to make a careful study of the "new, yet old way," until he became convinced that it was the only true way. and also that it was the same which Jesus practised and left for them as a glorious heritage. He ceased entirely to practise medicine nearly eight years ago, and had never regretted taking the step. His whole desire now was to become a Christian Scientist, and so bring this Christ-healing into the lives of others.—Southport Visiter.

An audience which nearly filled City Hall listened to a lecture on Christian Science Tuesday evening [May 11] by Bliss Knapp of Boston. The speaker was introduced by Gorham H. Wood, First Reader of First Church of Christ, Scientist, who spoke as follows:—
