Five years ago last Thanksgiving, Christian Science...
Five years ago last Thanksgiving, Christian Science came to our home in the darkest hour of our lives. My husband at that time had been intoxicated for a month, having been a slave to this habit since he was a young boy,—about thirty years. He was profane in language, a user of tobacco, a gambler, with all the attending evils of drink, and we were financially ruined. We had a valuable property, but had borrowed and mortgaged till we could get no more. My husband had taken a well-known cure, and all had been tried for him that drugs could do. Through a friend, Christian Science help was called for when he was in such a condition that he literally knew nothing. I did not know a practitioner had been called until the following day, and I had no faith whatever in Christian Science, but from that night my husband has never touched liquor nor wanted it; and one by one the other sins have been destroyed, the bad habits have disappeared, the ills of the flesh have vanished, till today he is clean in soul and body. The financial indebtedness is also wiped out—we "owe no man any thing" but love: joy has taken the place of sorrow, health of sickness; we have love instead of hate; prosperity instead of poverty; gladness instead of misery; peace instead of discord, singing instead of mourning; praise instead of cursing. This blessedness has all been worked out through the knowledge of Christian Science, which is the Christ-knowledge of God, man, and the universe.
When I saw the efforts which my husband was making toward the right, I at first read to him from Science and Health from a sense of duty, but as soon as I laid aside my prejudice the light began to dawn, and the Bible, which I had studied and dimly taught for years, became illumined by the Spirit of truth. As I read to him the Scriptures thus illumined, our hearts would overflow with joy, and we would exclaim, "Is it not wonderful!" We love Christian Science better than anything else on earth, for it teaches us of an ever-present God, always good, always Love, sending no evil to His little ones, but hiding and sheltering them in His omnipotent care. For this wonderful healing, and the transformation in both our lives, we "praise God, from whom all blessings flow," and our hearts are filled with gratitude to the dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who has shown us through Science and Health this highway provided for the people of God.
Written in love of the Master, who said, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."—Mrs. Etta M. Ousley, Austin, Minn.
