ITEMS OF INTEREST

Paper manufacturers and owners of timber lands conferred recently with Chief Forester Gifford Pinchot, with a view to the adoption of practical forestry methods. More than 3,000,000 acres of timber lands, out of an estimated 5,000,000 acres held by paper manufacturers, were represented at the conference, which was brought about largely through the efforts of the International Paper Company. The acreage represented comprised 1,617,000 in Maine, 275,000 in New Hampshire, 78,000 in Vermont, 887,000 in New York, 123,000 in Pennsylvania, 150,000 in West Virginia, and 25,000 in Michigan.

During the last ten years, says the Advocate of Peace, the total appropriations for the United States army have been eight hundred and nineteen million dollars, and for the navy, for the same period, eight hundred and ninety seven million dollars, a total for army and navy of one billion, seven hundred and sixteen millions. The appropriations for the prior ten years were only five hundred and seven millions. The increase, therefore, of the last ten years over the previous ten was one billion, one hundred and nineteen millions.

The differences between the "associated" interests using American moving-picture films and the "independents" using imported films have been settled by a fifteen-million-dollar merger, which is to be known as the Motion Picture patents Company. This company takes over all the patent rights of the Edison, Biograph, Armat, Jenkins, pross, Vitagraph, and Campbell companies. These patents include everything pertaining to moving picture operation and projection, and films will probably be rented instead of sold.
