Years ago, when Mrs. Eddy first saw the healing and redemptive power of God and Christ which she named Christian Science, she left all to follow what she felt to be the leadings of God, of duty, and of love; and it should be a matter of joy to every fair-minded person that everything which she has found worthy of her interest, devotion, and love has prospered. She has been at work to alleviate the poverty as well as the sin and sufferings of the world. She delights to see every one live comfortably and would have no one live in poverty. She believes that all labor, the highest as well as the lowest, should be adequately rewarded. She uses her income not only to advance the specific activities of Christian Science, but also to meet all pressing human needs. Her charities are very large, much larger than any of us know anything about, as she prefers to give in secret and leave it to God to reward openly.

No one is deprived of the help of Christian Science on account of his poverty, and yet it is at work to help him overcome his poverty as well as his other troubles. It is a part of the work of the Christian Science movement to see that every one has the literature who desires it and who will use it rightly, whether he has the money to pay for it or not. Its motive and effort are wholly philanthropic and beneficent, though individual Christian Scientists are still at work on the problem of overcoming their own selfishness as well as the errors of those to whom they are trying to minister.

Mrs. Eddy revises her works in order to give to her followers the benefit of her own unfolding insight. She believes that truth forever unfolds to those who seek and obey these unfoldings. She believes that the Spirit of truth, if we will only follow it, will lead us into the way of all truth. Many of the changes that she has made have been at a financial sacrifice to her, and only selfishness could attribute selfishness to such a self-sacrificing, generous, and noble nature.
