I have postponed writing my testimony, feeling that I...
I have postponed writing my testimony, feeling that I could not do justice to the truth, or make one who has not learned to avail himself of God's mighty power believe or understand one half of my experiences, for the blessings and the healing which the study of Christian Science has brought me are beyond description. One year ago I bought a copy of Science and Health, a book which I had never seen until the week before, but I felt as soon as I began to read that it was just what I wanted and had long been looking for. I must have been healed of my various diseases at once, although I did not surely know it then.
I had been very miserable for years, in fact had never been considered by myself or my friends as at all strong, and always had something the matter. I had suffered intensely for nearly twenty years from an intestinal trouble which is considered incurable by many of our best physicians. I tried the strictest dieting, till finally there were only a few things which I could eat without their causing great distress. A few years ago I began to have rheumatism in different parts of the body, but did not pay much attention to it until last fall. At first my feet were very badly affected; then I was taken down suddenly with a disorder of the bowels, so severe that nothing would relieve the pain except a narcotic. I was in bed over two weeks, and although I took what the physicians considered the best medicine, the pain continued most of the time for a month, until the day I began to read Science and Health; and I have never felt it since. For a year, and the first year in my life, I have been a perfectly healthy woman, and in that time I have not taken medicine of any kind or treatment other than Christian Science, of which I have needed a great deal.
This cure is not by any means "faith without works," as some claim, for if one has ever had a sick mind, it takes time and effort to cure it. I have a few times thought that my old troubles were beginning again, but a short period of mental treatment has entirely cured them all—just by realizing that immortal Mind governs me, and that God is "All-in-all." I began to eat of everything as soon as I got the book Science and Health, and I can now eat those things which used to cause great distress, without any discomfort. I have gained in weight greatly. I used often to have very severe colds, but I have not had one during the year, although I have had the symptoms several times; but they have never lasted more than a few hours, and I used nothing but Christian Science.
