"THE POWER OF THE WORD"*

HAVE we ever tried to realize the power of the word of Truth, whether spoken, written, or silently declared? Many times, when reading the Sentinel or Journal, I have wished to express my gratitude for the beautiful thoughts found therein, thoughts so uplifting, pure, and spiritual that the cares and perplexities which sometimes arise, pass away like mist before the sunshine, and a sweet sense of peace and quietness reigns within.

Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, with wonderful foresight, has made clear to thousands the power of the word, through "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and the truth taught therein permeates all the Christian Science publications. One turns from the usual daily record of news to The Christian Science Monitor, with a sense of relief and gratitude that we have been able through divine wisdom to secure this gift, and to know that through the power of the Christ-thought the purification of the press has begun. I can give but a faint idea of what this means, not only to myself but to all who are looking for the reign of righteousness here and now.

* "Miscellaneous Writings," page 398.

One day in the early spring, while walking among the foot-hills of the mountains in California, I came across a stream of clear water, and followed it for some distance toward its source. On either side and far above me trees, bright shrubs, and brilliant vines were clinging to the grayish green mountain-side, and the crystal stream reflected them in delicate tints from its pebbly bottom. I sat down, in a silence unbroken save by the musical ripple of the water and of distant bird notes; all nature seemed peaceful and harmonious. I knew that the source of this pure stream was far above me, even as the source of all purity is far above mortal sense, in the "mount of holiness;" and as the water of that mountain rivulet satisfied and rejoiced the thirsty, so does the spoken and written word of Truth nourish and gladden the weary ones of earth.

In Science and Health (p. 570) our Leader says, "Millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert—are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ's name, and never fear the consequences."
