Every form of mental healing that claims to work...

Owensboro (Ky.) Messenger

Every form of mental healing that claims to work through suggestion or through the influence of one human mind over another human mind, is opposed to the teaching of Jesus and diametrically opposed to the Principle and practice of Christian Science healing. This is the great line of demarcation between Christian Science healing and every other form of mental healing; and any form of healing that departs from Jesus' method, however slight the departure may be and whether it consists in calling in the aid of suggestion or the aid of the doctor's pellet, has no right or title to be called a form of Christian healing. To claim to be doing Christian healing while using any other power or agency than the Spirit of God, is to fly in the face of the teachings of Jesus or reduce him to the level of a common hypnotist. This is blasphemy. Christian Science, in obedience to the teaching and example of Jesus, recognizes no healing agency other than the one Mind, or Spirit.

You report the speaker as advising his hearers, when sick, to call in the best physician. This is good advice, and is exactly what the Christian Scientists do. They believe that the Father as revealed to us by Christ Jesus is the "great Physician." They believe that if there were a better physician or a better way, Jesus would have revealed the fact to the world. Why make a pretense of believing that God is present and exerting His healing power in favor of the sick, and yet maintain that He is not sufficient in Himself but must needs require the help of a human or material agency in order to accomplish His work? Why make a mockery of God and religion in this manner?

Everything from which the medicines of today are manufactured was in the world when Jesus was on earth: did he fail to recommend these so-called healing agencies because he was not sufficiently enlightened, and does the "best physician" of today know better how to heal the sick than Jesus knew? If God prefers to work through drugs and material agencies to heal the sick, would not Jesus have known it, and would he not have worked and taught his disciples to work in that way? Was not the healing done by Jesus, and by his disciples after him, better healing than the "best physician" can do today? Jesus healed the sick everywhere and of all manner of diseases, and taught his disciples to heal in the same manner that he healed; that is, without the use of drugs or agencies other than the Spirit of God.
