Although I had been a church member for forty years,...
Although I had been a church member for forty years, and part of that time a Sunday School teacher, yet I never had been able to understand clearly the declaration of our Master, "I am the way." If, as we were taught, Christ Jesus was a sacrifice for all sin, we had only to pray with the heart to be forgiven, make a good profession, join the church, and we were safe, sure of an entrance into heaven through the blood of Christ, for "Jesus paid it all." But this did not seem a satisfactory explanation of his words. I joined the church at fifteen years of age, and after this was frequently asked to give testimony of my feelings and experiences, which I never could do to my own satisfaction, because I always felt that anybody could talk, and that our Master said, "By their fruits ye shall know them." If we as professing Christians did nothing that the world's people could not do, where were we? Often the Master's words would come to me, "I am the way," and I knew that although I was trying honestly to do God's will, there was a mistake somewhere, and I was always hungry to know more about "the way." No explanation of these words could I get which made their meaning any clearer, until I found Christian Science, and read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. After I had been studying it for some time I was healed of liver and kidney trouble, and of stiffening of the joints. I was made entirely well, just be reading the wonderful "little book," and this healing proved to me that Christian Science is indeed the truth.
I learned how Christ Jesus is "the way,"—that it is by doing the healing works which he did that we prove to ourselves and others that we are indeed following the blessed Master's leading in the way he had opened up for us, and that a mere profession, even when we thought it possession, is very unsatisfactory at the best, when compared with being able to prove by our fruits that we are indeed walking in the "straight and narrow way." I rejoice that through the study of Science and Health by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, I have come to understand that which had been for so many years an unsolved problem.
Mrs. Christiana V. Turner, San Jose, Cal.
