THE CALL FOR CLEAR THOUGHT

Mrs. Eddy's words: "The time for thinkers has come" (Science and Health, Pref., p. vii.), are both a declaration and an appeal, and the need of this call of Christian Science for clear Christian thought is frequently made painfully apparent.

As an illustration we may cite the recent utterances of a clergyman who is said to have prepared in part for his ministry by studying the psychological clinics of noted doctors in Paris and London, and who feels called upon to say that people should be educated in psychotherapy "to save them from the exaggerations and errors of a well-known 'healing cult,'" and that the nature of one's religious faith need have nothing whatever to do with his healing efficiency! In a similar vein the editor of a prominent religious weekly has recently said.—

In Europe people regard the question [of healing] with calm and judicial mind. ... There the public has been led by thoroughly trained psychologists and physicians. The pathos is in the fact that our people do not know that what they accomplish by particular religious dogma, is being accomplished more satisfactorily in the quiet and unostentatious ways of science.
