During the three years that I have been interested in...
During the three years that I have been interested in Christian Science I have read the Sentinel regularly and have never failed to derive great help and enjoyment from its perusal, but I have often been surprised at never seeing anything from Florence, knowing what good work is being done here, in spite of very great antagonism and opposition. Besides the great gain and joy of these lifegiving services twice a week, and the meeting together of our little band of Christian Scientists, it has been a very great pleasure to my daughters and me to welcome so frequently at these meetings Scientists from all parts of the globe, to hear from their lips how Truth has helped them, and how splendidly Christian Science is spreading.
I first heard of Christian Science twelve years ago, but was then very averse to it. In the autumn of 1904 my daughters became interested in it, but this I considered merely a "passing fad." I tried to argue and laugh them out of it, but I could not fail to see the good it was doing them in many ways, and finding that they were not to be moved, I took the matter seriously in prayer, and one night wrestled long, asking to be shown the right way. Before dawn, "the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world," had shined in my heart, and I heard the voice of Truth say, "This is the way, walk ye in it." It has been the opening of a new life to us three; the surroundings are the same, but "all things have become new." Though we feel that we are but babes taking our first steps in it, we have been enabled by our knowledge of the truth to overcome many serious difficulties for myself, some of which were weak heart, rheumatic trouble, severe headaches, a very bad case of burning; my teeth, which had caused me much trouble and heavy expense all my life, were entirely healed in one treatment and have since become steadily stronger and better. Although passing through a period which according to materia medica is thought to be critical, I have been able to carry on my usual duties with ever-increasing strength. Some time ago the discord tried to manifest itself in great loss of strength and unconsciousness, but through our reliance on the divine power that heals all our infirmities, and thanks to the aid of a kind practitioner, I came out of it manifesting more health and vigor than ever before in my life.
My elder daughter, who had from birth been exceedingly fragile and delicate, has developed, in these three years, into a strong, healthy girl, and has had very many proofs of the power of Truth. She was bitten very badly on her face by a dog, which in the old days would have caused us great fear as to its results, but it was quickly overcome through our understanding of divine Principle. My younger daughter fell down the cliffs of Sorrento and injured her wrist very seriously, but was able to play the piano ten days afterwards. Seasickness and fear of contagious diseases have also been overcome, and we are indeed thankful to live in a city where we have the opportunity to learn more and more of this beautiful Science.
