The first that I remember to have heard of Christian Science...

The first that I remember to have heard of Christian Science was through a semihumorous sermon preached against it. This sermon was published and widely circulated, and I do not doubt that it carried the first tidings of Christian Science to many beside myself. I did not, however, investigate the new doctrine at once, but after removing to Cincinnati and finding that many of my friends there had become Christian Scientists, I began to try to find out what had attracted them. At first their statements seemed just as the preacher had said, "ridiculous in the extreme." I could not understand the explanations given in answer to my questions, and was about to drop the whole affair when something happened.

I had been subject all my life to a bilious affection with frequent attacks of illness. I had used all sorts of remedies, tried a good many doctors, and finally settled down a which seemed to be a regular liquid fire. These attacks were extremely severe and usually lasted from four days to two weeks. One morning several weeks after coming to Cincinnati, an attack came on while I was at the office, and I started home to get my medicine. On my way I passed the office of a Scientist friend, and merely to rest a few minutes, but without the slightest intention of asking for help, I went My friend looked up at my pain-drawn face, and asked if I wished him to help me. Now I did not in the least believe he could do me any good, but I did not want to hurt his feelings, so I said, "If you can help me, I wish you would." He closed his eyes and sat silent for perhaps one full minute, and in that brief space of time I felt a distinct relaxation within, and realized that the seeming power of the disease was broken. When I left the office, ten minutes later, I walked out almost straight. My friend gave me another treatment that night, and I reported for duty at the office next morning as usual.

This happened six years ago, and I have never been troubled by the aliment since. The special mixture and the rest of the contents of the family medicine-chest went long ago to the dump, and I find that Christian Science is equal to the overcoming of all adverse conditions which arise in the family. We are earnestly studying the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and feel that we are gradually coming closer to the truth. — George B. Sherwood, Cincinnati, O.
