One of the first proofs vouchsafed me of the truth and...

One of the first proofs vouchsafed me of the truth and power of Christian Science was in the healing of my eyes. At the time my attention was first attracted to Christian Science I had been troubled with them for some fifteen years. For the last eight years of years of that period I had found it necessary to wear strong glasses constantly, and although I consulted skilful oculists, and followed the treatments and used the glasses which they prescribed, I never received anything more than partial relief. My eyes were almost a constant source of discomfort and distress. When at their best I could use them only a few minutes without resting, while not infrequently there were days at a time when I could use them scarcely at all. Aside from the distress they occasioned, therefore, they seriously handicapped me in my occupation, preventing me from accomplishing anything like the amount of work that otherwise would have been possible.

Something over two years ago, with my eyes in this condition, I received one week's treatment from a Christian Science practitioner. After two or three treatments I discovered that I could read Mrs. Eddy's book, Science and Health, without glasses, and after receiving four or five treatments I discarded my glasses entirely. An optician warned me not to part with them, declaring that it would be impossible for me to dispense with them; nevertheless I have never since used glasses, nor have I suffered any interruption in my occupation on account of my eyes, notwithstanding my work is of a nature which calls for close application of the eyes through each day. On the contrary, my eyes since that time have been in a far better condition without glasses than they were before with them. In truth, they no longer interfere with me in my regular work, and during the past year I have done a vast amount of work in addition to my usual duties.

I do not wish to convey the impression that my healing was easily accomplished, but at no time did I permit myself to entertain a doubt as to the ultimate outcome. I realized that if I was sincere and really relied on Christian Science, there was no excuse for my wearing glasses. There was a further factor in the case well worth mentioning. While my healing was going on, I was reading Science and Health to my wife, and endeavoring to assist her to an understanding of its teachings, for she had then, after several years of illness, sunk into a state of invalidism from which material remedies offered hardly a ray of hope. She recovered through the assistance of the same practitioner who treated me, and in trying to help her I undoubtedly promoted my own recovery.
