The Magog News

Another reform which has made some progress is against the unreasonable custom of condemning those things that we do not understand. It is rapidly going out, but that it has not entirely gone was evidenced on a recent Sunday evening in a Methodist church in the little village of H—. The preacher was from a neighboring circuit, and is considered a good speaker, an earnest advocate in the cause of truth, and an ardent worker in his church. No report reached "The Busy Woman" from the morning service, but she was an eye-witness at the evening discourse, which was based upon that thrilling passage in Exodus where the children of Isreal were commanded to "go forward" in the face of a seemingly insurmountable barrier, and trust in the Lord God alone for the saving of their bodies as well as their souls. Obeying this command, they were privileged to see the supposed laws of nature set aside and the "arm of the Lord revealed." We are reminded here that this was no extreme or unusual case in the history of God's people, who were continually being brought out of dangers and doubts. The sacred writers have ever striven to show that it is the same God who forgiveth our sins, who also healeth our diseases. In view of all this it seems a little strange that there should still be so many doubts as to His ability or His willingness to do this now.

The preacher did not express himself on this phase of the subject. He stated that he was not preaching a sermon but giving a heart-to-heart talk. He was showing that it was impossible for all men to see alike, that in reality no two men could see axactly alike, that their thoughts and beliefs were constantly changing. He appeared to concede that all might have a measure of truth, and have a right to their convictions, when suddenly, by an unexpected flank movement, he upset that generous supposition and told the little congregation, which included a seat full of believers in that faith, that Christian Science had no right to the name Christian.

While one can but be surprised at such a statement coming from a well-informed pulpit, it should only have the effect of quickening into newer and deeper life the teachings of Christ at brought to light and emphasized anew by Mrs. Eddy, that noble woman whom the world is beginning to understand and appreciate. "Follow your Leader, only so far as she follows Christ" (Message to The Mother Church, 1902, p. 7). has been her oftrepeated injunction, and it has proved a forceful rallying cry and a veritable gleaming "pillar" by night and by day to the ever-increasing multitudes who "follow that way."
