If Christian Science, when correctly understood even in a small degree and faithfully applied, will enable us to destroy disease as it has done in thousands of cases; if it gives us a stronger desire to overcome hate, anger, resentment, envy, fear, and all the myriad evils of the human mind; if it lifts us to an improved plane physically, mentally, and spiritually, it is surely worth while, even with the experience of some failures arising from lack of growth. The Christian Science student takes himself just where he is, with all his diseases and errors, begins at the bottom of the ladder, and works up step by step. He knows that he cannot all at once do the mighty works of the Master, thus obeying the divine commands, but by putting into practice the little he does know of God, by right thinking and right living, he knows he will make progress in the ability to destroy, root and branch, both sin and disease.
Christian Scientists have no quarrel with physicians. They acknowledge with gratitude their humane efforts to relieve the suffering of mankind; they recognize the lofty motives of the better class, and are glad when their kindly and honest efforts bring comfort to sufferers. Like Abraham, they are willing meekly and courageously to say, "Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee." They have, however, for themselves tasted and seen that God is good—they have found through the teachings of Christian Science that true thoughts of God bring healing on their wings, and they can no longer rely for aid on the material theories of medical works. The inherent rights of man give each the liberty of working out his own salvation according to his own best judgment.
