It is now eighteen years since I came into Christian Science...
It is now eighteen years since I came into Christian Science, when I was born anew in the truth. A dear friend, who had been sick a long time and given up by physicians, having seen the healing of a neighbor in Christian Science, accepted it and was soon better. She sent for me to come and see the Scientist. I was glad and ready, as two weeks before my last physician had said, "I must be honest and tell you that I can do no more for you." He was very kind, but told my husband I would not be here long. I had been under several different physicians for five years. It was thought that my lungs were seriously affected. I commenced to gain from the first, under Christian Science. The first trouble to leave was one from which I had suffered for years, and for which I had been taking laudnum. Another trouble I had from childhood, but one after another went and at the end of a year I felt like a new person. I have never taken any medicine since the first. I look back with pleasure to my second year in Christian Science, it was so spiritually happy, nothing to mar or ruffle the harmony; but I had to be tested and tried. Burdens seemingly too heavy to bear had to be met, but as I walked alone with God, they made me to stand firmer and stronger. I felt the all-presence about me as I clung to the Bible and Science and Science and Health.
Early I had been taught to read the Bible, and I had united at the age of fourteen with an orthodox church. Many were the questions from childhood which had never been satisfactorily answered, but they unfolded one by one, so simply and beautifully, as I continued to read our text-book. Not half can be told, as words fail to express it. I pray that my life may so reflect the fruits of spirit as to show my gratitude to God, and to Mrs. Eddy, for the physical and spiritual blessings received and still being attained.
Mrs. Olive Corwin Hawkins, Friendship, N. Y.
