[Written for the Sentinel.]

The Brave Pioneer

The brave pioneer on the rugged frontier
Is a happier man, after all,
With his thoughts leaping free as the waves of the sea.
Than the man whom the town holds in thrall.
The brave pioneer on the rugged frontier
Of the world's slow but sure thought-advance,
Grows noble and strong with each conquest of wrong,
And God smiles in his conquering glance.
