I have enjoyed the blessings of Christian Science for...
I have enjoyed the blessings of Christian Science for six years, and have received so much help through our periodicals that I feel it my duty to send my testimony to the Field. I was a sufferer for twelve years. At first I had some severe troubles for which I tried nine doctors, each one encouraging me to expect a cure. I had to take so much medicine that it affected my stomach, at first slightly, but gradually it grew worse until I could only take liquid food. I was in much distress and lived mostly on tonics. I tried one doctor after another, giving them all a good chance, but they could not reach my case. Then my nerves became completely shattered. I had to stay in bed most of the time for three years. I could not bear the slightest noise, and for this reason was deprived of all my friends. At last I gave up the doctors but still took lots of tonics, thinking to gain some strength in that way. I had always been taught to pray, and our minister came every week to pray with me. I often wondered what I had done that I received such punishment; then again I would think that there was no God.
When I heard of Christian Science, at first I was doubtful, thinking it was only another fad. I was told that the healing was performed without medicine, and thinking that it was the devil's work, I tried not to listen to it, and was afraid God would only punish me more severely for trying it; but when I heard of it again, it aroused some hope in me, and I wanted to investigate it. A practitioner was sent for, and when he arrived I told him that I had always prayed to God for help, and could not understand why my prayers were not answered. He told me that I had evidently not been praying to the one true God. That seemed clear to me, and I asked for treatment. After the first treatment, I ate a good meal and there was no distress. This seemed wonderful to me. I took ten treatments in all, and kept on gaining. From that time on I ate everything that was set before me. I burned up the stomach pump and other appliances which I had been using so long. I could not at first read Science and Health, as I was German, but I have since learned to read it understandingly. We have had many proofs of the healing power of Truth through Christian Science, and have seen error's nothingness. I feel indeed very grateful to God, to Christian Science, and to Mrs. Eddy, who so bravely pointed out the way for us. It is my earnest desire to follow her as she follows Christ.
