The Real Work of Christian Science
The popular idea of Christian Science is that it is primarily a system of healing of physical ailments. This has been indeed a prominent feature in the propaganda of Christian Science, but it is not the fundamental one.
That healing of physical ills does follow the study and realization of the truths of Christian Science is undoubtedly a fact, but this healing is itself a result. The prominence given to physical healing is natural. It attracts the attention of those outside the fold who might not be drawn to Christian Science by its promise of spiritual regeneration.
This was no doubt the reason why the Master answered the question of John, "Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?" as he did, "Go and show John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me."
