A Progressive Minister

La Porte (Ind.) Republican

The Rev. E. D. Daniels, pastor of the Swedenborgian Church in this city, preached a sermon last Sunday morning in which he spoke of Christian Science in the following fair manner:—

Of late years a movement has started up which has grown to wonderful proportions. It has for one of its objects the healing of disease, not by hypnotism, spiritualism, animal magnetism, or anything of the kind, but by the power of God,—the healing of disease by coming near to, and forming a union with, the divine One who is the source of health. . . . It goes without saying that a movement which has already gained tens of thousands of adherents of whom a large proportion are intelligent and educated people; a movement which meets the want of thousands of longing souls; a movement which in certain quarters is thoroughly organized and has built grand churches; a movement which evidently has in it something of perpetuity,—it goes without saying that such a movement must have in it some elements of truth. And it is the part of candor and rationality not to attempt to frown it down, but to ascertain what truth and good there are in it.

It is certain that the Bible promises physical health as a result of religious faith or trust. In Exodus the Lord promises to take sickness away from His people. He healed Hezekiah of his sickness in direct answer to prayer, which we learn in Isaiah was an exhibition of divine love and mercy. In the Psalms we read of the Lord as one "who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases." Says the Psalmist, "O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me." And again, "Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses. He sent his word, and them." But we need not multiply passages; the whole Bible, both Old and New Testaments, is full of them.
