Upwards of fifty-eight years ago...
Upwards of fifty-eight years ago I was living in Ireland, where I was born and reared. At that time I had never heard of Christian Science, of Mary Baker Eddy, or of her book Science and Health. I had never known anyone there who called himself a Christian Scientist, nor had I seen any Christian Science literature of any description. In fact, I cannot recall ever having seen the mention of this Science in any magazine or newspaper as the name of the religion founded by Mrs. Eddy.
In the spring of the year 1900 a Christian Scientist was visiting the town where I lived. Before returning to Boston, she made a present of her own copy of Science and Health to a friend of mine, and he, in turn, lent it to me because he was not interested in it. The woman had told us that Christian Science heals the sick.
I was very much in need of healing at that time. I tried to heal myself by reading this textbook but failed. Nevertheless I was curious to know what Christian Science is and what Mrs. Eddy had discovered; so I read the book several times. As I continued to read, my thought regarding God so completely changed that I felt a heavy burden, which I had carried for years, fall from me.
