Sunday School

Meetings of Teachers and Officers

In The Mother Church, and generally in the branch churches, meetings of teachers and officers of the Sunday School are held at intervals. There is no rule about the frequency with which such meetings should be held. Most of the churches hold them either semiannually or quarterly.

In addition to the regular meetings, many Sunday Schools hold informal group meetings of the workshop type. These are called as a rule at the discretion of the superintendent, who meets on different dates with the teachers of different age groups.

Sunday School teachers' meetings, whether the regular meetings which follow a prepared program or the informal workshop meetings, are for the purpose of considering the welfare of the Sunday School. There is no place in them for Bible study, for expounding metaphysics, or for giving instruction on teaching methods. Often, however, teachers quite properly tell of their experiences in presenting the lessons or in emphasizing certain passages from the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, or certain portions of Scripture, or in calling attention to the qualities and achievements of different characters of the Bible. In addition, such subjects as regularity of attendance, interest in the lessons, individual methods of reviewing the Commandments and Beatitudes, home assignments, fruitage, contact with parents of pupils, and so forth, have a rightful place in Sunday School teachers' meetings.
