"BLESSED ARE THE MEEK"
[Of Special Interest to Young People]
A Class of boys in a Christian Science Sunday School were discussing the beatitude (Matt. 5:5), "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth." One voiced the opinion that people who were meek were frequently used for "door mats." Another agreed with him and several disagreed. Among the latter was one who said: "I don't think you have the right idea of meekness. You are confusing it with weakness. Mrs. Eddy speaks of Jesus as being both meek and mighty; therefore true meekness must go hand-in-hand with spiritual strength."
At this point, another member of the class recalled an experience he had had in a recent high school track meet. He had been using his understanding of Christian Science while awaiting his turn to participate, when it came to him very clearly that of himself he could do absolutely nothing, but, because he reflected God, he had unlimited ability. He remembered that Jesus never took credit for doing anything himself, but always gave credit to God. As a result of this unfoldment, he had never performed more creditably than at this particular meet. The boy concluded his remarks by saying he felt that in this instance he had caught a glimpse of the true meaning of meekness.
The class turned to John 14:10, in which Jesus so clearly states that it is God that "doeth the works." After a careful study of this citation it was evident to all the boys that their ability to perform any given task was in direct proportion to their knowledge of God's power and omnipresence and their understanding of man's oneness with God. The class agreed that acceptance of this truth was the foundation of true meekness and humility.
