ON USING WISDOM

A Young girl who had just had a healing of a cold through the application of Christian Science, was preparing to shampoo her hair when her mother cautioned: "I wouldn't shampoo my hair for a while, if I were you. You know we must use wisdom."

"Yes, we must use wisdom, Mother, but are you sure that what you suggest is wisdom? My hair needs shampooing, and I am sure that it is right for it to be clean. You know we can either dictate to matter or let it dictate to us."

The mother took the much-needed rebuke and began to analyze her thinking to see what had prompted this word of caution to her daughter. She recalled that when she was growing up her parents, who were not students of Christian Science, taught her that the body, when exposed to certain conditions, would catch cold and that one should never wet his head soon after recovering from a cold. She had not realized that she was still harboring such superstitious beliefs, but could plainly see now that her caution had been prompted by anxious concern, or fear, instead of wisdom.
