"The highest service"

"Think as men of action. Act as men of thought," declared Bergson. Thus prepared for service, each one, in the measure of his readiness to cast every endeavor on behalf of humanity into the right scale, will give proof of his value in the world.

It was to such service that the writer of the Apocalypse must have referred when the spoke of those who had endured and triumphed through self-sacrifice and purification. "Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them." Steadfast dominion, the consciousness of God's presence, and the courage which preserves willing continuity of service in hours of darkness and affliction as well as in those of victory and joy, these are assured for him who knows the Christ is in the midst. In steadfast consecration of thought and action mankind will always find deliverance, the kingdom of heaven replacing all lesser kingdoms as sense gives way to Soul.

Christ Jesus did not minimize the demands that would be made upon his followers; he told them of a cross to be taken up, sacrifices of self to be made, a service to be performed. The mission of the Christ to humanity for the instruction of each individual is summed up in those brief words, "I am among you as he that serveth."
