From Letters, Substantially as Published

An editorial in a recent issue of your publication advocated a cheerful and optimistic attitude towards certain features of the present economic situation, and in this respect should be and is commended. However, its reference to Christian Science in this connection revealed a lack of correct information regarding that Christian religion and accordingly conveyed an erroneous impression of it to your readers. I should, therefore, like to present to them through your columns something of the actual teaching of Christian Science on the point involved.

After setting forth various phases of existing political conditions, the editorial said: "There's also the element of Christian Science. Why could deny that the chap with pain in the stomach would at least to a small extent relieve that pain if he told himself it wasn't so bad after all?" This comment seems to imply that in correcting physical or other discords Christian Science resorts to mere optimism or even self-mesmerism; but this is quite the reverse of the teaching and practice of Christian Science, which completely eliminates the human, mortal mind as a factor in its spiritual healing, and relies only on divine Mind, God, "who," as the Psalmist declared, "healeth all thy diseases."
