Because I was curious to know what Christian Scientists...
Because I was curious to know what Christian Scientists believe, I eagerly accepted a friend's offer to lend me the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I was delighted with what I found therein. It seemed to me that on every page it stated that God made all and made it good. Here, I thought, is Christianity as Jesus taught and lived it. I recognized that the author must have been inspired. Despite this very favorable impression, however, I felt that Christian Science could not possible be practical.
Then, one evening, I accidentally spilled boiling coffee over one hand. Here is a chance to try Christian Science, flashed into my thought, followed by the realization that Spirit had not been injured and my hand knew nothing. I held to this truth. By the time dinner was over, the hand had regained its natural hue, and at no time had there been any pain whatever. This was a marvelous experience to me—it proved beyond all doubt that Christian Science is practical.
A short time later I awoke one morning feeling very ill. It seemed necessary that I should be at my post that day. Recalling a testimony I had read in a Christian Science Sentinel the night before, in which mention was made of "the scientific statement of being," on page 468 of Science and Health, I looked it up and memorized the first two sentences: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." Thought was so uplifted by this truly wonderful statement by our dear Leader that in about fifteen minutes I was completely healed, and there has been no recurrence of the difficulty in over twenty years, though previously it had often presented itself.
