I was once afflicted by influenza

I was once afflicted by influenza. I worked mentally about it, declaring its nothingness and the allness of God, good, but I was not immediately healed. Then I found that I had been entertaining thoughts of resentment that, as a Christian Scientist, I should have been influenced by anything other than good. The thought of being resentful over a condition which I was declaring to be nothing was so ridiculous that I laughed, and the influenza disappeared.

Christian Science has healed me of a false sense of sympathy. One day someone told me that a friend had a certain ailment. I was very sorry. An hour or so later I had that condition too. It is always necessary to know the truth about a lie, and it is much more difficult to do this when one admits a lie to be true. For two days the battle with error went on, and then the thought came: "Man can never bow down to any false belief. Man is upright, spiritual." I was much better, but the healing was not complete until I realized that real sympathy consists in knowing, regardless of idle gossip or the evidence of material sense, that man is God's child, and therefore spiritual, perfect, harmonious, and complete.

I am grateful to God that Christian Science has come into my experience; grateful for Christ Jesus, the Way-shower; for the consecrated life of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and for every activity of the Christian Science movement.—C. Bassett Burke, West Krugersdorp, Transvaal, South Africa.
