Truth Always the Remedy
"Hope springs eternal in the human breast." It is a remarkable fact that, regardless of repeated failures and disappointments, mankind is ever expecting to find a panacea for its ills. The encouraging note is that more and more are searchers looking to the only source from which lasting help can come, namely, God, Truth. And many are beginning to see that all the delving of the ages into material theories and phenomena has not revealed Truth.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has taught the way of deliverance from evil so simply that anyone who is humble enough to become "as a little child" may find freedom. She says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 142, 143), "Truth is God's remedy for error of every kind, and Truth destroys only what is untrue." This reiterates the teaching of Christ Jesus, who said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." But one may miss the way unless one is willing truly to take the Master at his word and accept the spiritual truth that makes free.
No one can originate Truth, because Truth is God. But one can become willing to listen to Truth instead of to the arguments of mortal mind, or personal sense—the supposed opposite of Truth. The argument may present itself, particularly to the less experienced Christian Scientist, "I have not sufficient understanding of Christian Science to demonstrate it." Just here we should begin to let the truth remedy error and destroy what is untrue. And what is the truth in this instance? That the real man, the true self or spiritual consciousness, is at one with and reflects God, divine Mind, and therefore eternally possesses unlimited spiritual understanding. We read in Proverbs, "Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?" In the Christian Science textbook our Leader says (ibid., p. 536), "The divine understanding reigns, is all, and there is no other consciousness." God, Truth, being omnipresent and ever self-expressed, the problem resolves itself into a willingness to acknowledge Truth and let it silence the lie.
