Composure

A Composed state of thought is of great value to all who possess it. But how can it be attained when almost every day brings news of threatenings and strife, tending to induce fear in those who hear it? Mortal mind claims to be very active at present, constantly suggesting evil; and when evil beliefs are accepted as true, fear follows, destroying the composure associated with a harmonious state of consciousness. And when fear is present, sickness is liable to occur, accompanied by suffering, sorrow, despondency, and loss.

Perfect composure is possible only to perfect consciousness. God is infinite and perfect Mind. Being infinite Mind, He is conscious of His own entire spiritual creation, that is, of all that is real. He is thus conscious of man, His spiritual idea or reflection. And since man reflects God, man's consciousness must be perfect, even as God is perfect. Hence, the consciousness of the real man expresses perfect composure. This truth, which pertains to our real selfhood, is invaluable to know. Indeed, it must be known by whoever would attain to a calm, composed state of mind.

Again, since God is infinite—All—what mortals call evil has no real existence. From this it follows that in reality there is naught to fear; naught to destroy the peace, the harmony, the composure of those who know the truth about God and the real man. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 60 of "Retrospection and Introspection": "Christian Science reveals God and His idea as the All and Only. It declares that evil is the absence of good; whereas, good is God ever-present, and therefore evil is unreal and good is all that is real." She continues, "Christian Science saith to the wave and storm, 'Be still,' and there is a great calm."
